About Us

Mission Statement:
Because He First Loved Us is a relational ministry to refugee families to meet spiritual, educational, and practical needs through family mentoring and resource networking.
BHFLU was started in 2006. It was formed after we attended an informal tutoring program run by a wonderful lady named Merrie Lee, whose program was inspired by a documentary on refugees in America. Before long she had friends and community members involved, and the group quickly grew. We tutored the children in whatever space we could find in our homes, but soon the group got so large that one cluster of us split off to ease the over crowding.
The more involved we got in the lives of the kids and the families, the more we saw the need for another organization to address the needs of refugees in Salt Lake City. After much thought and prayer, we approached the board of Discovery Christian Community about taking us on as an official ministry of the church. They did, and we have been meeting in the church ever since.
Every week we tutor overĀ 75 children, in an attempt to help them succeed in school, where they are struggling to learn the language and catch-up on education they missed in the refugee camps. We also mentor families; helping them to find jobs, make wise decisions with their finances, access healthcare, and much more.
All of our staff work on a volunteer basis.
BHFLU currently servesĀ 32 families, totaling approximately 204 people.
